How did Nazi concentration camp commandants communicate with prisoners due to language barriers?

Primo Levi writes fairly comprehensively on this in his book, The Drowned and the Saved - in particular, the chapter on "communication". In summary, German was the official language used by the camp authorities (At least in Auschwitz, where Levi was a prisoner). Those prisoners who were unable to learn at least enough German to understand the commands given to them typically didn't survive for long.
