Terry Pratchett has written a lot of fantasy about the process of modernization. Are there any examples of interesting historical *accuracies* in his work?

Terry Pratchett has written a large number of Discworld novels that go something like: fantasy Renaissance-ish society comes to terms with a new technology or social movement.

These are works of complete fantasy and make zero pretense towards historical accuracy. I still wonder, though: do any of his books provide an interesting and accurate illustration of some feature of the real-world history of new tech or social movements?

Terry Pratchett makes a lot of jokes involving name-dropping of historical people and events (e.g. large parts of Soul Music are references to real musicians), but I'm looking for something a little deeper. The ideal example would be something that makes you, as a historian, say "Pratchett really did his research on this one (or had a fantastically luck accident); this captures a complex point about history quite well."

Example books:

Going Postal (modern postal systems, telegraphs)

Soul Music (rock & roll)

Moving Pictures (movies)

The Truth (newspapers)

Monstrous Regiment (early feminism)

and many, many more

Wonderful question! As a huuuge Pratchett fan, I can't wait to read the replies. Here are a few things I've picked up on...

  • There are definite historical antecedents for the clacks system.
  • A torture implement featured in Small Gods seems to be based on the Brazen Bull.
  • The Glooper in Making Money is based on a computer called MONIAC built in 1949.
  • The Necropolis in Pyramids is presumably based on Egyptian necropolises, but from its scope, I imagine it looking quite like Wadi Al-Salaam in Iraq.
  • The combustibility of octocellulose in Moving Pictures is inspired by real dangers associated with nitrocellulose, which was used in early photography, X-ray, and motion-picture making.
  • The character of John Keel in Night Watch may be partially inspired by Robert Peel, who is credited with inventing the modern police force.

I'll add to this post if I think of any more.
