Did Eleanor of Aquitaine actually ride bare breasted to Damascus?

by wheresmyglebe

I've heard from numerous sources that Eleanor and her retainers rode bare breasted while on march to the crusades. It was mentioned in Lion In Winter, it's mentioned on wikipedia, but there are no direct citations that refer to it, specifically. Preferably, are there anything close to primary sources that either substantiate or refute these claims?

According to David Townshend in "The Tongue of the Fathers: Gender and Ideology in Twelfth-Century Latin" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1998), while you can find primary sources stating that Eleanor and her ladies behaved liked Amazons (usually Niketas Choniates is cited though he doesn't refer to Eleanor by name and wasn't born until 10 years after the Second Crusade), primary sources that say they actually dressed like Amazon warriors is non-existent. That aspect of the story doesn't emerge until the Victorian Era, from what I can find.
