Was the average German citizen happy during the Nazi period and during WWII?

Were they still as nationalist as during the start? What was their quality of life and social status like? Did they turn to wanting "liberation" from the Nazi government?

According to Ian Kershaw in "The End" life for the average German became a living hell after the Allies began bombing German cities around the clock. When this happened support for Hitler and the NSDAP steadily declined. By the time Hitler committed suicide only die hard fanatics mourned his death. For most Germans their main concern was surviving the war and the war ending as soon as possible which the death of Hitler signaled finally as a real possibility, even though voicing such opinions openly, or to the wrong person, could result in execution by the fanatics.
