Im trying to trace some family history from WW1
We had a family member who served in the british cavalry who was sadly was killed in a mined woods. Sadly thats all the information I have as my granddads memory isn't good anymore I don't even have a name or where he was killed.
If you have any ideas where i should look with the limited information i have or if you can help will be brilliant :)
Thanks
You can obtain in his WW1 records from this site: http://www.greatwar.co.uk/research/family-history/tracing-ww1-family-history.htm
To find his name, what relation was he to your grand father? I have done a lot of genealogy and some family first names are similar or used again in later generations. If he is your grandfather's brother, then you have a last name. His first name may match other relatives. Where was your grandfather born? Chances are if he is related to him they were born in the same town or area.
For his military records, there weren't many true cavalry units in WW1, so chances are he was probably killed in France in the early stages of the war, such as 1914, before it bogged down into a trench war.
Do you have other relatives, great uncles or great aunts you can talk to about him who may have been related?
There are many resources, but these are some areas to start.
