Assuming that, say, Butler had agreed to help the conspirators like Prescott Bush in the coupe, and successfully ousted FDR (with FDR dying in the process or otherwise, you guys decide, you're the experts) with Butler at the helm, what would happen exactly? Would Butler and co. have an election, or simply put one of them in the POTUS seat instead? Or would they do away with the POTUS, Congress, and the SCOTUS, and re-do the whole of the US government?
In any case, would there be a mass rebellion/revolution against this? After all, despite my personal dislike, FDR was very popular at the time, as was, you know... not being a dictatorship. Would there perhaps even be a civil war in the end?
And of course, would we have ended up getting involved in WWII under a Smedley Butler (and co.) leadership, or not? Would we be involved faster, or later? Would we have been militarizing previous to involvement, unlike what FDR did?
Those, amongst many others, are just some questions I (and others that I've seen across the web) have about what would've happened, had Butler not "taddled" on the conspirators. Any insight you guys have would be great, and any answers to what I asked, and even things I didn't ask would be wonderful. I realize a lot of this has to do with theories, which are of course always debatable. I also understand you may not be able to provide links and sources on everything you predict, as it 1) isn't a widely-covered topic and 2) is, again, entirely theoretical. That being said, speaking for myself, I'd love to hear anything anyone has to say regarding predictions, first-person accounts, and so-on involving this incident in history.
Note to admins: I realize this may be more geared towards /r/HistoricalWhatIf, but for some reason it's private (?), and also, I find this community to be, by far, the most reliable when it comes to things like this, and definitely the most educated. If you'd like me to take it down, just tell me (or do it yourselves, it is your subreddit, I suppose).
EDIT: I obviously meant 1933, sorry about that. Also, my title was repetitive. Again, sorry.
Butler seemed to have been one of those rare "incorruptible" types, hence why he refused to participate in the coup. Therefore, he would likely have declined any position of authority. But supposing he did and became the head of state, the US probably would have avoided involvement in WWII (at least until it became absolutely impossible to continue to do so; e.g., if Germany conquered the rest of the world and came after the US directly). Butler makes it very clear in War is a Racket what his position is and how much he was against wars for any other than defensive reasons. He outlined a scheme for avoiding war, part of which was national referendum where a 'yes' vote for war meant having to sign up for the armed forces. Presumably, under "Dictator Butler" that would become constitutional policy.
It's hard to say whether there would have been a revolution, or simply an arrest and trial of the conspirators after the coup, or whether such a plot could even have succeeded.
