Why didn't the UK just grant the American colonies proportional representation in Parliament?

Was there concern that it would upset the political balance in Parliament, comparable to Republican concerns about admitting Puerto Rico as a state? Were they afraid it would be a bad precedent?

Long story short: The British offered a form of representation to the Americans, but the Americans knew that such representation would hold little influence in parliament. It also meant that any laws and acts passed by Parliament were more legitimate for the colonies since they would have been represented as well.
