Is the idea of warfare between a smaller group of guerrillas and a conventional military a 20th century phenomenon, or not? Like Vietnam, Taliban, etc.

Is your question whether or not guerrillas has waged war against non-irregular armies before the 20th century? Tiako wrote a great post a month ago on this, highlighting a few cases from Roman history.

Not really an answer, but Sun Tzu's art of war is cited as having influenced Mao Zedong's fighting strategies, notably Mao's famous guerrilla warfare.
