These medals, called Journee du Poilu - literally 'Hairy Days' but meaning something like "Days of the Soldiers" - were issued by the French government during the war as a way of raising money. The government instituted certain fundraising days and those who contributed enough were issued the medal to wear to signify their generosity to the cause.
