How were ancient armies supplied on their long campaigns?

by jamesthetable

It baffles my mind how on campaigns, such as Alexander the Great's Asian campaign, armies of tens of thousands of men were able to march through inhospitable deserts and foreign territories for years while also being prepared and victorious in numerous battles. How did they get enough food and water for all the soldiers? I'd also like to know how often and what did they eat, and how long could they manage without any resupply.
