Was the USSR taken completely by surprise, or did Stalin's intelligence services try to warn him that something was up?

In the days before the invasion, several anti-Nazi German soldiers deserted and crossed the Russian lines to warn them. However, Stalin believed that they were actually agents of the German generals, trying to get the USSR to attack Germany and provoke a war that Hitler did not want.
