Why did the British Empire never establish manufacturing bases in their colonies - what the underlying causes were for that method of thinking and what affects it had on the colonies and the empire?
We did to some extent (e.g. opium production in India and tea refinement in Ceylon) However, the manufacturing process is where most of the value is added. If the production is done at home it keeps the profits at home.
