Was the North African campaign really a "War Without Hate"?

by RobWithOneB

The North African campaign of the Second World War is sometimes known as the "War Without Hate" owing to how chivalrously the British and Germans supposedly treated each other. Is this borne out by documentary evidence, for example, statistics of how often MPs had to intervene to prevent war crimes or PTSD rates among veterans?

I've had to remove several answers which are either based on anecdotes or doesn't answer the question that OP is asking. An excerpt out of a memoir is not sufficient since that's only one perspective of out of several thousands.

Let's not forget the rules. Answers are expected to be comprehensive and informative and as always, if you're not completely certain about what you're writing or you hesitate for a moment, refrain from posting. Thank you. :)
