Unfortunately there isn't really a way for us to know the answer to this question. Norse pagans didn't leave any writing for us about their belief system, and what we do have was written down after they had been Christianized for hundreds of years, and some of it was written explicitly to show how the old pagan belief system was inferior or superseded by Christianity.
