Why did gender roles develop?

A lot of people say that gender is a social construct. Why was this social construct built, and why did people feel like they needed it?

I'll agree with athiestguy- a teleological approach to the origin of specific gender roles isn't quite appropriate. You might get some good answers here only if you specify a certain place or role. Otherwise, check out /r/askanthroplogy if you're interested in the prehistoric, more theoretical side of the earliest gender differences we know of.
