How prevalent was the Roman custom of burying statues that were struck by lightning?

by Hugh-G_Rection

I just went to the Vatican Museum last week, and saw the large gilded bronze of Hercules ( http://imgur.com/UHbB9Tr ), and teh sign in front said it had been buried after a lightning strike. I was wondering if it was a relatively common recorded event, that is, are there additional sources for this tradition, or just the inscription on the piece of travertine on this particular statue was found beneath? Thanks.

Interesting statue, was the leaf added in later centuries? Or is it original?
