What can I do to become better at studying history?

by Nkaj

I've very recently decided to switch from taking psychology into honours to taking classics into honours. I would like to do an M.A. in War Studies (or something very similar) and am wondering what I can do to become better at studying history/improve my chances of getting a first/improve my chances of getting into a good uni for a masters.

Obviously reading will probably help but if anyone has anything more to offer I'd really appreciate it!

Well to start with it's important to get a "basic" understanding of history in general so that you will be able to put the wars into a historic perspective. For that I would recomend: Civilization in the West, Penguin Academic Edition, Combined Volume. As you can see in the titel it only focus on the West so it might be a bit limited if you want to look into Asian history etc(i used this book for two semesters, and I find it easy to read). Futhermore it's important to really get into the theory behind history and by that I mean how to analyse the information you are given so you for instance will be able to see which material is good and what you should stay away from. If you have more specific questions you are welcome to ask.
