What are the best texts to read when studying the Inquisition?

by paul_brown

Greetings folks. I submitted a similar question weeks ago to no avail.

Be assured I have perused your Book List, but when looking through [Religious History](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/culturalhistory#wiki_christianity on Christianity, I found nothing specific to the study of the Office of the Inquisition. In European History (the Middle Ages), I found nothing particular regarding the Inquisition.

In my own research, I have found Dr. Ed Peters' book, Inquisition which I am anxious to read.

Through the recommendation of a friend, I have also found Cullen Murphy's God's Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World, but the book is terrible history. It reads far more like an op-ed written to a distinctly American audience. Murphy spends far more time bragging about his travels than discussing real history and he is prone to inject irrelevant opinions into his commentary. It is not unusual for him to write in such a manner that compares the current "War on Terror" to the Inquisition.

Any help in gathering relevant (and reputable) sources to study the Office of the Inquisition - from its inception in the Middle Ages to its close (or re-branding) in the 20th Century - would be greatly appreciated.
