This week, ending in February 05 2015:
Today's thread is for open discussion of:
History in the academy
Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries
Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application
Philosophy of history
And so on
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
For those working in academia who are also mother-hennish like me, the American Freshmen Survey for 2014 is out with some interesting data. The still-dropping rate of exposure to alcohol before college is particularly interesting, in light of 2014's many well-publicized alcohol-caused deaths in freshmen. (As usual, I violated my rule never read the comments on Inside Higher Ed.)
Without violating 20 year rule, what is the current thinking on Hobsbawm's periodiziation of a "long" nineteenth and a "short" twentieth century? I realize, of course, that not all will share his views on discrete matters.
