Is there some origination point of the concept of dragons that later spread east and west, or were the two just developed in parallel?

As you can read in earlier threads, the European and Asian "dragons" are related only in name; they are rather different beings at heart. As most languages are prone to do, English took a word for something in its own culture, and, lacking a better word, used it for a similarly reptilian creature elsewhere.
