According to William Manchester's American Caesar, the military officials in Washington told MacArthur that he was going to Australia to launch a big assault to hold onto the Philippines and didn't find out until he got to Australia that the folks in Washington had no intention of actually doing that. It's a great read. I highly recommend it.
