How did the inquisition look like and function during the 17th century and up to Napoleon abolishing it.

by Chrisehh

Im in the middle of reading Napoleon: A life by Andrew Roberts and he just talked about how Napoleon abolished the inquisition after his annexation of Spain. I thought it was werid for the inquisition still to be a thing during the age of enligthenment since it is so linked to medival times. Anyways, how was it viewed before it was abolished and how did it function?

The only thing the Spanish Inquisition was capable of at this time was censoring. The old practices of torturing possible heretics etc. was long gone. The Inquisition returned a few times after the French were defeated but finally officialy abolished by Maria Christina on the 15th of July 1834. The last person who was killed by the Inquisition was a schoolteacher, Cayetano Ripoll in 1826 (though not formally by the Inquisition and it caused quite a scandal).
