I really hope that I have posted this in the right place!
So, I'm doing an undergrad. degree in History in the UK and I'm in my third year. I have chosen to write my dissertation (10,000 words) on death in Ancient Egypt and I was just wondering if any historians out there know of any books/websites/journals/documentaries that I should take a look at.
My university doesn't have any lecturers that specialise in Egyptology so I've been placed with a guy that specialises in Religious Studies and Theology. It's fantastic that he wants to be my mentor but he doesn't know much about the topic.
I know it sounds crazy to pick a topic that no one can help me with but I've always been fascinated with the Ancient Egyptians and how they perceived the afterlife. If there are any Egyptologists out there that have written some material on this subject or know of someone that has, please link me! It will be much appreciated! Thanks :D
A word of caution: death in ancient Egypt is a huge topic. You might be better off picking a smaller part of that topic to research and going from there. For example: beliefs about animal mummification in the ptolemaic, or the book of the dead
Genetal advice, I would start with the books on our book list. As you read through them, take note of who is being cited in the text for things that catch your interest. Then track those citations down, read them, and note their citations. And just continue down that rabbit hole until you have the info you need for your paper.
If you have access to jstor, you should be able to find a wealth of articles, as well as book reviews.
Have a look at this website. It's generally given to the first year students of Egyptology at my university and can be a good starting point, although I've found it lacking in more than one area.
