What was slavery like in South America during the height of the slave trade?

by ThePieLife

.....as in conditions, populations of slaves in countries, similarities/differences to the United States slave trade, and other general facts. I am very curious because as a student of the American education system, we do not learn much about this topic!

I believe that the US was the only place in the New World where the slave population had a natural rate of increase, meaning that the population could sustain itself without having to import more slaves. I can't find the source for that at the moment but I've had different history professors all claim that.

That should tell you what you need to know about the conditions. Also in the Caribbean and South America slaves were mainly brought in to do work on sugar cane plantations, which were much harsher than cotton plantations in the US
