The target in Hiroshima was the Aloi Bridge, because it could be easily identified from the air. Due to crosswinds, the bomb missed the target by ~800 feet and hit a surgical clinic.^1

The bomb on Nagasaki missed the planned target area by ~2 miles.^2

I don't think they had planned on taking out just "military" targets. Bombing wasn't that precise and especially wasn't with an atomic bomb. The purpose of the bombing was to send a message to Japan that it needed to surrender
