by paradoxicaleu

As far as I know, Austria inherited Burgundy, and a few years later boom, the Spanish have it. How did this happen? Was it an inheritance?

Ferdinand and Isabella, the monarchs famous for supporting Columbus, married their children well. One daughter was married to the English royal family, another married into the house of Habsburg, and two others married into the Portuguese royal family. The daughter Juana married Philip the Fair of Burgundy son of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The couple had a son Charles. When Isabella died, Juana and Philip were to become joint monarchs of Castile. Philip died before that could take place. About a decade later Ferdinand died. In his will, he made Charles his heir along with Juana. Such that in 1516, Juana and her son Charles ruled Castile and Aragon as co-monarchs. Shortly after, Charles other grandfather Maximilian died. By virtue of that connection, Charles, King of Spain, inherited the dynastic holdings of the Habsburgs. He would also be elected Holy Roman Emperor, making him Emperor Charles V.
