I need help finding an old Naval quote. Details inside.

by IAmTheBADASS

I am trying to find a specific Naval quote or speech. It was in a thread forever ago and I have been trying to find it for an hour, tried google and everything.

The quote is from a naval commander, who's position is outnumbered/surrounded by (a large amount) of Japanese (maybe) destroyers, and he basically tells his men they are surrounded and are going to die, but that they will fight and hold off as long as they can.

I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I figured a history buff may be able to help me.

E: Thanks everyone. /u/thefourthmaninaboat figured it out for me!

You might be looking for Ernest E. Evan's quote from the Battle off Samar : "A large Japanese fleet has been contacted. They are fifteen miles away and headed in our direction. They are believed to have four battleships, eight cruisers, and a number of destroyers. This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can." (Although the last couple of sentences might actually have been said by Robert Copeland during the same battle)

You absolutely must read The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors to get the story on the Battle of Samar (part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf). You will have a much deeper appreciation for just what that quote meant. It's the one naval history book I recommend more often than all others.

It's about Destroyer Escorts facing down two of the most power Japanese battleships in an attempt to protect the northern flank of (IIRC) MacArthur's return to the Phillipines.
