Christianity started off as a bunch of folks with their own weird-to-outsiders religious beliefs living as a commune, which sounds like a cult to me. While some apocalyptic extremism was there from the get-go, it wasn't the norm - Paul criticizes it in some of his epistles. (There were some notable examples of suicide-by-cop, though.)
