Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!
I wonder why every good, in-depth, detailed history book about Indonesia is written by non-Indonesians... or perhaps I should say concerned. sigh
In any case, just want to give my thanks to Thomas Stamford Raffles, probably the first person who did in-depth research about Java history and finding Borobudur.
Can somebody recommend me books or papers on the various (forced) population movements after the second World War?
I'd like to know more about the millions of German refugees, the various population exchanges in the East (Poles, Ukrainians, etc.). If there is a comprehend book that summarizes all of these movements in a bigger context this would be awesome, but I also would be very happy with books that focus on single ethnic groups, etc.
Thanks!
I'm trying to find a good book/source to read about Umar, the second Muslim caliph. Hopefully an objective and balanced one (i.e. not devoutly complimentary, and not Muslim-bashing either). Thanks in advance!
Only just realised there’s this thread today, maybe someone might be able to help with the book request I just posted?
I just finished Brian Fagan's book "The Little Ice Age" and found the application of climate to history extremely interesting.
Do any of you know of any other authors/historians who write about the historical effects of weather/climate? I'm not looking for a Jared Diamond type look at why "the environment" (as in domesticated animals, etc.) influenced civilization, but rather something that talks about climate and history much like "The Little Ice Age" did.
Thanks.
Reading this week is Jeff Woods Black Struggle, Red Scare: Segregation and Anti-Communism in the South, 1948-1968 a good review on how Segregationist and Anti-Communist thought intersected during the Civil Rights era.
Can i request books/a good sub answer on racism in Ancient Rome. It's interesting and comes up enough that i think a high quality response should be in the FAQ
I was wondering whether anyone could help me pick between
