This helmet belonged to my grandfather from when he served in World War II. On the back, there are two white lines painted on. I was told by my father that the two lines meant that he was sparred from participating in the Battle of the Bulge (one line meaning he would've been sent). I've been looking around for sources to confirm this, but no luck. Could anyone help me out?
Aaaaaaaaand I formatted it wrong... Sorry about that.

Do you know what rank he was? Two vertical lines like that is the symbol for a captains rank, and he may have improvised it on a new helmet. I've never heard of them marking soldiers who didn't have to be in the battle of the bulge.
