I'd like to learn more about unit sizes and organization (platoon, company, division, etc). What could an American unit accomplish in WWII?

I'm choosing America, because I'm most familiar with its army, but feel free to talk about whoever.

I was playing company of heroes, and you do many impressive stuff with your company (according to wiki, 80-250 soldiers). What would a company be expected to perform in WWII? Were they expected to take over a village and support themselves for instance? What about platoons, divisions, etc.

Thanks!
