What book you recommend for the history of the socialist/communist/social democratic movement in Europe?

Also, can you tell me the political biases of the author for the book you recommend. Thanks!

Donald Sassoon, One Hundred Years of Socialism. You can get a sense of what it contains from this review.

Not exactly what you're looking for probably, but kind of overlapping your specified subject matter, Peter Marshall's Demanding the Impossible: A History of Anarchism covers a wide range of socialist/communist movements and tendencies throughout history, including European expressions of it. Hope this helps, somewhat.

EDIT: forgot to mention, as a historian and writer Marshall does write in the anarchist tradition, though he focuses on other subject matter too.

Rudolf Rocker's Anarcho-Syndicalism has an introduction of the history of worker's movements in chapter two. It could be a good place to find directions for further reading of more specific topics.

The author was an anarchist.
