Not to project my western world view on different cultures, but Singapore just seems so incredibly well organized, successful, and frankly rich, as compared to other south East Asian countries. What are the historical reasons for this discrepancy?
Singapore was controlled by the British from 1819 to 1963 (excepting the Japanese occupation during wwii). Hong Kong had a similar history and is also quite wealthy. They both avoided some of the post war horrors (e.g. Pol Pot, Mao, wars, etc) that their neighbors suffered, and are international ports.
But I'm not an expert, and I'm curious to hear a more informed response.
