Question about Texas Attorney Generals

by lm6000

I saw on wikipedia that for the period 1880-1999 that all Texas Attorney Generals were democrats. Why in such republican dominated state would there be over a century of a office held by democrat party members? Thanks.

lamecooter

Almost all political offices in Texas and through out the South had a majority of Democrats in office after the Civil war. Any person that ran on the Republican (the party of President Lincoln) ticket risked being labeled a "Carpet-Bagger"

Keep in mind that even though they were members of the Democratic party, they were still largely conservative.
