Much of Europe (to my knowledge) went through a "dark age" after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, where not much history was recorded, and thus our historical knowledge is scarce. Has this occurred in other regions at different times? Are there vast periods of, say, Chinese history we know very little about, in between flourishings of recorded knowledge?
