In retrospect, how should the Vietnam War have been waged in order to ensure the greatest chance for success?

Yes, this is unfortunately a what-if question but let me recommend you to understand what went wrong first, before trying to figure out how it could have been done differently. In my educated opinion, one of the main reasons to the defeat in Vietnam was the fact that it was treated as a conventional conflict instead of an unconventional conflict.
