The video has annotations that kinda sorta explain their rationale for some of them. And I think the video is cool and, if nothing else, gives a much more realistic impression than the original Disney costumes. But I'm wondering if anyone here has noticed any glaring flaws in their historical accuracy, or if their versions seem pretty well-researched.
For reference, the princesses shown are:
Snow White ("c. mid- to late 1500s Germany")
Jasmine ("c.300s Arabian Peninsula")
Tiana ("c.1920s New Olreans")
Aurora ("c.1300s England")
Pocahontas ("c. early 1600s Virginia")
Belle ("c. 1700s France")
Some are pretty decent, only just costume-y, while I have to admit Belle's is horrendously awful. Snow White has a half-way decent silhouette, but it's clear they used a generic pattern brand rather than basing it on actual garments. The fabric is also modern blends and finishes. The underskirt, for example, should be separate from the other pieces and whole. The bodice should not fasten up the center front with hooks and eyes, but rather lace (could also be on the side or up the back). While the sleeve puff on the top is almost correct (a little oversized for proportions), the long exposed sleeve of the undergarment is not accurate. Picture something more like this Italian gown or these historical costume renderings.
I can't speak to Jasmine, as I focus on European/American dress. Tiana is fine, though for original garments being easily obtained today I would have hoped for a finer quality or a more every day 1920s fashion. Makeup was a bit heavy for the character's personality, but that's just my splitting hairs.
Aurora is at about the same level as Snow White in accuracy. I can at least see where they got the source from. 14th century is a bit harder for me to show examples as the art work is not as realistic and there just aren't surviving pieces that show well. This would be the sort of gown worn by Aurora pre-princess. These images of Valois Princesses and other royalty shows the other side well.
Pocahontas is also a little outside of my range, but they are correct in assuming that body exposure and tattoos are completely normal.
Belle. Oh, Belle. It's just terrible. First off, that wig. While wigs were popular for women pre-1770s, that style is more late 1770s, when women were actually commonly using their own hair, pomaded and powdered which can give it a whitish appearance, styled over cushions. The gown itself I would like to give them the benefit of it being based on formal court wear, but it's really just another commercial pattern. The bodice should not be separate from the skirt, however the petticoat (the center section) is a separate piece. In addition to being made of very modern fabrics, the sleeve ruffles are very wrong. Mainly though, Belle never went to court to see the King or Queen, so she wouldn't have been wearing that. At the absolutely most formal (so formal it would be weird to wear to a private two person dinner) something like this sack gown would have been worn. Something more like this portrait for formal day wear.
I'll answer about the costumes to the best of my ability.
Snow white is definitely wearing synthetic fabrics and a bad wig. Her hairline would have historically been higher and she probably would have plucked her eyebrows off, not shaped and filled them like the makeup artist did. Taking cues from the rest of her costume and assuming she's aristocracy her skirt would have had a much stiffer structure like so, but then they couldn't have done that cute little fall scene.
I'm skipping Jasmine because I don't know anything about pre-Islamic Arabian costume.
Tiana looks pretty good except the makeup. They did wear heavy black shadow and liner but the mua did a very big blown-out modern smoky eye. Even the most extreme vamps kept the black closer to the eye.
Sleeping Beauty-more synthetic fabrics, more bad hair pieces. This one is the most off to me. It seems like they're sort of going for this look, which is 100 years later, and is also Italian. In the 1300s they would have still been wearing the simpler slimmer gowns like these. Also, this whole dress looks like crap. It doesn't fit her, it's infinitely too long and looks unfinished. The outer coat is cut too large and is made of fabric with so much plastic in it that it doesn't move at all and sits super boxy on her. Really everything is done so poorly on this one that it's hard to even know what they were going for.
I don't know anything about Powhatan costume, and I know they had to cover her nipples for the video but the way they have her necklaces stuck to them is hilarious to me, especially when they make her jump.
Belle's wig is terrible and her makeup is super modern. Also the costume doesn't fit her and she's not wearing it properly, when she lifts her arms up you can see the waistband on the skirt, which would either have never shown, or the whole thing would have been a gown rather than a bodice and skirt piece. She's also missing her ]understructure](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Woman%27s_Corset_LACMA_M.2007.211.353.jpg/640px-Woman%27s_Corset_LACMA_M.2007.211.353.jpg). Honestly those 18th century dresses are incredibly expensive to make, so they probably just rented this from a costume shop.
Happy to answer any further questions! Sorry for ugly formatting, I'm not sure why the wikimedia links don't want to play nice.
