When the Crusaders sacked Jerusalem and massacred Jews and Muslims, how did they make sure that they did not kill Christians by mistake?

A related question: Would there have been any fashion/dress differences between the various religious groups? I guess that is to ask, would one be able to reasonably discern whether someone on the street was Christian, Jewish or Muslim based on clothing, hair style/facial hair, etc, at this time and place?

Also, how segregated would the population have been? While I would imagine the different religious groups (and other groupings such as ethnic background, etc) would naturally clump together, was the city as a whole rather segregated? Where some areas rather diverse?
