Perceptions aren't exclusively shaped by historians, they naturally play a big part but its also popular culture that shapes it. Anne Frank's diary is one of the most read books in the last 70 years and read (not sure if that is the case today though...) by many people in high school which is a very influential period in your life in how you perceive the world.

Another example you might want to look into is the Trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1962. He was a SS officer that fled to Argentina but got tracked down by the Mossad (Israeli secret service) who captured him and brought him to Israel were he was trialed and executed. This trial had huge coverage and is seen as a big factor in bringing the holocaust back to the foreground. With the holocaust being so essential to the perception of Nazism this would certainly be something to look into.
