I am reading that their monastery was sacked by Li Zicheng in 1641 and I am curious as to why. Were they that threatening of a fighting force that their base needed to be destroyed?
David Graeber in his book on Debt notes in a passing that Buddhist monasteries also served as banks in Asia but does not go into detail deeper than that the important debtors sometimes banished the monks, melting their treasures into currency.
