I'm sorry in advance it this isn't the right place to ask this. I am taking a course on WW2 and I was wondering why we refer to asian leaders like Mao and Tojo by their first names (or their full names) but usually refer to western leaders by their last names like Hitler or Staline?
Mao is his "last name". His father's name is Mao Yichang and his grandfather's name is Mao Enpu. It's the same with Tojo, the name "Tojo" was passed down from his father and paternal grandfather. In many Asian countries your last name (surname, family name, etc) comes before your first name.
