Joshua (Yeshua in Hebrew) was a popular Jewish name for much the same reasons it's remained so: Joshua was a major Old Testament hero. The Gospels, written as they were in Greek, rendered Yeshua as Iesu, which became the English Jesus, and Jesus and Joshua became separate names much like James and Jacob did.
