One of my professors said that the largest mass lynching in the United States was of Italian immigrants in New York City. Is this true? If so, what event is he referring to?

Are you sure he's not talking about New Orleans? "On March 14, 1891, 11 Italian immigrants were lynched in New Orleans, Louisiana, after a jury acquitted them in the murder of David Hennessy, an ethnic Irish New Orleans police chief." It was the largest single mass lynching in U.S. history.
