Why weren't European colonial settlers as vulnerable to new diseases as Native Americans apparently were?

The common telling of this is that the Native Americans were mostly killed off by European diseases. If that really was the case, why was the reaction to new diseases so asymmetrical? Surely the Europeans were being exposed to new diseases as well.
