Stalin never attempted to appear "God-like" to the people of soviet republic. His official title was secretary-general of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The soviet union attempted to strip people of their beliefs and enforce "gosateizm" which was a state ideology adopted from Marxism-Leninism. (Athiesm)

Lenin states : Religion is the opium of the people: this saying of Marx is the cornerstone of the entire ideology of Marxism about religion. All modern religions and churches, all and of every kind of religious organizations are always considered by Marxism as the organs of bourgeois reaction, used for the protection of the exploitation and the stupefaction of the working class.

Thus Stalin never attempted to appear "God like". He attempted to be as a Strong leader.

May i ask where you got that question from.
