Facial hair styles amongst confederate soldiers in civil war?

by yelloyo1

Doing a civil war reenactment in may. Fighting as arkansas militia, what facial hair would be the most historically accurate?

PS Are there any subreddits for civil war reenactments?

Fortunately, there hundreds, if not thousands, of photographs of Confederate soldiers. I would not be surprised if you could successfully do an image search for Arkansas soldiers from the exact year you're portraying.

From what these pictures tell us, we can see that many, if not most, men sported facial hair of some sort. Mustaches and beards, styled and unstyled, were in fashion for both officers and enlisted.

Have fun, be safe, and don't duck the question when people ask you why you're fighting to defend slavery.
