If American slavers had children with their slaves, what did they consider their offspring to be? Slaves? Children able to inherit property? Something in between?

Slaves.

When Africans were first imported into the colonies, slave codes were enacted into law codifying their status. Children inheirited the condition of the mother. Given the stucture of society at the time, virtually all mixed children would be the offspring of a free white father and an enslaved black mother, rendering them slaves.
