I only found one book on South Africa on the sidebar, 'Of Revelation and Revolution: Christianity, Colonialism and Consciousness in South Africa. I'm interested in learning about the country and would be appreciative if someone with expertise or knowledge in this area could recommend me some books to pick up. Specifically, anything pre-1948 so I can get an understanding of the colonial history and it's development toward Apartheid before I jump into that area.
For the Anglo-Zulu war, I'd recommend Ian Knight's Brave Men's Blood.
I'd cautiously recommend Thomas Packenham's The Boer War. Its a good read but I'm concerned it doesn't convey a strategic view of the war. Packenham also holds some views which are now challenged, such as Baden-Powell deliberately expelling black people from Mafeking to stretch the food supply.
Also recommend Cold Stone Jug by H C Bosman which is a pretty niche but darkly entertaining auto-biographical account of what it was like for an inmate on death row in the 1930s. If you like his style, you could do worse than read some of his fictional short stories which help to give an insight into contemporary and near contemporary society.
