My brother in law found this coin on a hike and washed it off, we couldn't figure out what it is or where it's from though. We're based in Southern California in case that is an important factor

Style is that of Spanish silver cob. It is a type that is extremely popular to make replicas of, sometimes of actual silver, sometimes of base metal. Many of the "Atocha" coins used in keychains and the like are silver from the ship minted in to modern versions of the coin - I had one myself, from which the coin was lost on a train.
As Sharkdog suggests, it's worth getting it authenticated, or if you have the desire and equipment, doing at least a basic mass/volume calculation to determine if it may be silver. I'd put it at very very very very long odds to be an original, but if it's made of silver, it's worth your while.
