I'm trying to start an academic project on studying how frontiers evolve in the abstract to make predictions about how the internet will evolve in the future, but I am having difficulty finding resources that study how frontiers change over time in the abstract or by comparing multiple frontiers. Most of what I find is only about the historical change of a single frontier, rooting those changes in study of that particular frontier's social content and context. Does anyone know of good research materials that are tilted towards studying how frontiers evolve more abstractly? No rush; I'm just doing this project on my own, its not for a class or anything.
